How long do EV batteries last?
The short answer. An EV battery is designed to last for many years, but capacity gradually declines. Warranty terms commonly cover a defined period, distance, and minimum retained capacity, so the exact wording matters more than a generic lifespan claim.

A battery usually loses capacity over time rather than suddenly failing. Climate, cell chemistry, time spent at very high charge, and repeated high-power use can influence the rate.
The displayed range also changes with weather, speed, tyres, and driving style, so a lower range estimate does not by itself prove battery degradation.
Read the warranty threshold
Check the battery warranty separately from the general vehicle warranty. Look for the minimum retained capacity, exclusions, transfer rules, and whether commercial use changes coverage.
Used buyers need evidence
Ask for a battery health report when available, inspect charging history, test both AC and DC charging, and confirm that outstanding recalls or software campaigns are complete.
