The short answer

Most EVs take roughly 6 to 12 hours for a substantial home charge, depending on battery size and charger power. A suitable rapid charger can often take a modern EV from 10% to 80% in about 20 to 40 minutes.

The four numbers that determine charging time

Battery capacity, starting charge, target charge, and the power the car can actually accept determine the useful estimate. The charger label alone is not enough.

A 150 kW charger does not force 150 kW into every car. The vehicle controls the maximum rate and reduces power as the battery fills.

Why 10% to 80% is commonly quoted

Charging is usually fastest at a lower state of charge and slows significantly near full. The 10% to 80% window describes the part of a road-trip stop where rapid charging is most useful.

Use a realistic home estimate

Allow for charging losses and remember that most drivers replace only the energy used that day. An EV with a large battery does not arrive home empty every evening.
