Is the BMW i4 worth considering?

Our view. ADAC measured 20.5 kWh/100 km and a 450 km Ecotest range for the xDrive40, and NAF's tests of the earlier eDrive40 ranged from 434 km in winter to 584 km in summer. ADAC timed 28 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent, and US buyers should check recall work, as NHTSA lists 11 campaigns for 2022–2024 cars.

  • NAF NAF / Motor El Prix summer range test 2022, June 2022

583.6 km vs 565 km WLTP

Beats the claim · 103% Published reference

Efficiency

  • ADAC ADAC Autotest and Ecotest, BMW i4 xDrive40, October 2025

    20.5 kWh/100 km vs 16.7 kWh/100 km WLTP

Falls short · 81% Market or version specific

BMW i4 xDrive40, 295 kW, four-wheel drive, 81 kWh net. ADAC Ecotest cycle: air conditioning on, extra load, includes a motorway section; consumption includes charging losses. ADAC derives 450 km against 546 km WLTP; the official figures shown are for the xDrive40 M Sport from July 2025, and the page does not say when the test car was built.

Rapid charging

    28 min 10–80%

    Local check needed

BMW i4 xDrive40 (81 kWh). DC rapid charging, 10–80%, under ideal conditions. Two minutes quicker than the roughly 30 minutes ADAC quotes as BMW's figure; that claim was not found on a BMW page, so it is not paired.

  • NAF NAF / Motor El Prix summer charging test 2022, June 2022

    40 min 10–80% vs 31 min 10–80% manufacturer claim

Falls short · 78% Published reference

BMW i4 eDrive40 2022 (pre-facelift, 80.7 kWh as listed by NAF). Summer, car driven warm and battery preconditioned where possible, 10–80%. Nine minutes slower than the claim NAF lists, with a 90 kW average; NAF's winter 2022 test of the same version took 33 minutes.

Most concern the high-voltage battery or drive system; 24V611 covers a possible crack in the left longitudinal beam on 2024 cars, and 25V395's summary names i4s up to 2025.

Measured figures are compared only with an official figure in the same unit and test basis; the bar’s tick marks 100% of the claim. Winter results are shown, not judged. How the evidence check works.

How far can it go?

The published reference is 386–600 km. WLTP, BMW Group press release, April 2024, Europe: eDrive35 386–500 km, eDrive40 468–600 km, xDrive40 444–548 km, M50 xDrive 413–522 km. Speed, temperature, wind, elevation, tyres, load and cabin heating or cooling all change real-world range. How EPA, WLTP and CLTC differ.

How quickly does it charge?

The highest published DC figure is Up to 205 kW. Up to 205 kW DC (eDrive35: 180 kW) and 11 kW AC. BMW's release gives no 10–80% time; ADAC quotes BMW's figure as about 30 minutes.. A peak rate is reached briefly; the average across a session is lower.

Home charging time depends on the energy added, the car’s AC limit, the charger and the supply. Estimate a session with this car’s battery.

What to check before buying

Who is it for?
Drivers who want a sporty, long-range electric saloon-style car with a practical hatchback boot.
What needs checking?
Version and wheel size, which change the range considerably, and whether the car is a pre- or post-2024 facelift model. In the US, check that recall work has been done, particularly the high-voltage battery and drive software campaigns.
What is the evidence?
Official BMW and EPA figures, ADAC Ecotest and charging test, NAF winter and summer tests of the 2022 eDrive40, Euro NCAP 2022 and the NHTSA recall database.
