Is the Rivian R1S worth considering?

Our view. On Edmunds' mixed route the 2025 R1S came within 3–6% of its EPA ranges, but Car and Driver's 75 mph test gave a Tri-Motor Max only 250 miles, and no version uses less than 39 kWh/100 mi on the EPA cycle. It suits buyers who need seven seats, towing and off-road ability more than efficiency, and the recall list is long.

What to check before buying

Who is it for?
US families who need seven seats, up to 7,700 lb of towing and real off-road ability in an electric SUV, and who can charge at home.
What needs checking?
NHTSA lists 22 recall campaigns for 2022–2027 models, including seat belt anchor bolts, airbag fasteners, a high-voltage distribution box on 2025 cars and a rear-camera software fault; check which apply. Range varies by more than 150 miles across versions and wheel sizes.
What is the evidence?
EPA figures from fueleconomy.gov, Rivian's own site, three Edmunds range tests, a Car and Driver highway range test and the NHTSA recall database. NHTSA has not crash-rated the 2025 R1S; IIHS names the 2026 R1S a Top Safety Pick+. It is not sold in Europe.
