Is the Renault 5 E-Tech worth considering?

Our view. ADAC measured 17.3 kWh/100 km and a 345 km Ecotest range for the 52 kWh car, and What Car? calculated 166 miles in winter against an official 253 miles. Rapid charging matched Renault's 30-minute claim in ADAC's summer test, but official ranges rose with the August 2026 update, so earlier test cars are not identical to new ones.

166 mi vs 253 mi WLTP

    Cold-weather result · 66% Published reference

Renault 5 52kWh Techno (Comfort Range, 148 bhp). Chilly day, UK roads; range calculated from measured efficiency of 3.2 mi/kWh and the usable battery size. 34% below the official figure; What Car? calculated this from efficiency on its route rather than driving until empty.

  • What Car? What Car? group test: BYD Dolphin Surf vs Citroën e-C3 vs Renault 5, June 2025

155 mi vs 193 mi WLTP

Falls short · 80% Published reference

Renault 5 Urban Range Techno, 40 kWh, 121 bhp. Two-day UK road trip in summer; range calculated from 3.9 mi/kWh average efficiency and the usable battery size. 20% below the official figure; the R5 was the most efficient of the three cars but has the smallest battery.

Efficiency

  • ADAC ADAC Autotest and Ecotest, Renault 5 E-Tech 150 Comfort Range, July 2025

    17.3 kWh/100 km vs 14.4 kWh/100 km WLTP

Falls short · 83% Published reference

Renault 5 E-Tech electric 150 Comfort Range (52 kWh) Techno, 110 kW. ADAC Ecotest cycle: air conditioning on, extra load, includes a motorway section; consumption includes charging losses. ADAC derives 345 km against 417 km WLTP for the tested car; Renault has since raised the official range for this battery to up to 430 km.

Rapid charging

  • ADAC ADAC Autotest charging measurement, Renault 5 E-Tech, July 2025

    Local check needed

Renault 5 E-Tech electric 150 Comfort Range (52 kWh) Techno. DC rapid charging in summer, measured from 10 to 79% in 30 minutes. ADAC says the result confirms Renault's 30-minute claim, but Renault measures from 15% and ADAC's window ended at 79%, so no official figure is paired.

Safety rating

How far can it go?

The published reference is Up to 430 km. WLTP, Europe: 52 kWh Comfort Range up to 430 km (previously 410 km), 40 kWh Urban Range up to 315 km, new 36.5 kWh Five up to 305 km. Renault media release, 25 August 2026. Renault UK quotes up to 259 miles (52 kWh, pending homologation) and 194 miles (40 kWh). Compare it only with figures from the same test cycle.

Speed, temperature, wind, elevation, tyres, load and cabin heating or cooling all change real-world range. How EPA, WLTP and CLTC differ.

How quickly does it charge?

The highest published DC figure is Up to 100 kW. Renault UK: 15–80% in 30 minutes with the standard 100 kW DC charger. The new 36.5 kWh Five has an 80 kW DC charger (Renault media, August 2026).. A peak rate is reached briefly; the average across a session is lower.

Home charging time depends on the energy added, the car’s AC limit, the charger and the supply. Estimate a session with this car’s battery.

What to check before buying

Who is it for?
Drivers who want a small, distinctive electric car mainly for town and regional driving.
What needs checking?
Battery size and build date: cars built after the August 2026 update have higher official ranges, and the cheapest Five version charges at only 80 kW. Renault quotes charging from 15%, not 10%.
What is the evidence?
Official Renault figures, ADAC Ecotest and charging test, What Car? winter and summer real-world range calculations, and Euro NCAP 2024. NAF has not tested the car.
